Sandman by Neil Gaiman

I just finished re-reading the entire Sandman series over the last 2 weeks.  I grabbed the first volume one day just looking for something to read during my sons drum lesson.  It had been a while since I had read it and none of it was fresh in my mind.  Man, what a read.

I am certainly not going to even attempt to make any type of literary observation.  many books by far more learned people that I have already done this.  I simply wanted to say that if you are looking for a fascinating story, you should definitely grab the first volume of this and give it a shot.

Artwise, it starts off a little rocky.  People’s faces change panel by panel.  But once is settles into its groove, it is fascinating.  Different artists for different arcs, but it feels right.  There were a couple fill in books where the style change was a bit jarring (in A Game of You, I believe) but overall it was very enjoyable.  Having met her, it was very fun to see Jill Thompson draw herself into her story.

Storywise, it is amazing.  Every once in a while I think that I could sit down and write.  When I think this, a new Peter Straub novel comes out and I realize that I shouldn’t even try.  Gaiman is just as good at dashing my hopes.  I see the layers, the sheer literary knowledge, and realize that I could come up with something, but it could not be spectacular.  So, if you want to read something that will make you think and leave you wanting more, give it a shot.
