I’m late getting the posted, not the reviews
Mr. Degnan’s Gradebook
week of July 27 and August 3rd, 2011
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 666: B
Jam packed issue leading into Spider-Island. Fun stuff, but I question the timing of yet another big event, especially considering Fear Itself isn’t over yet.
BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT 4: B-
Great art but I can’t get into this story. Hopefully, this book will find itself in a better place after the relaunch. Finch is very talented and shouldn’t be overlooked.
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BUCKY 620: A
Nice opening story for the book’s new format. Enjoyable, especially after seeing the movie. Additionally, the art complimented the book’s setting well.
DETECTIVE COMICS 880: A+
Scott Snyder’s dark writing fits perfectly in the world of Gotham. I can’t wait to see how this arc ends.
.
FF 7: C-
Sloppy art and a detached story have ruined the momentum of this book.
FLASHPOINT: PROJECT SUPERMAN 2: B
A much darker take on the origin of the man of steel in the world of Flashpoint. Excited to see how it plays into the main story.
INCREDIBLE HULKS 633: C
A disengaging and confusing story that is really shaping up to be a let down. I expected more from Pak’s grand finale. Kudos for the Dr. Stange cameo though.
THE MIGHTY THOR 4: B
Odin versus Galactus apparently comes down to a mind fight. The same is not true for Thor versus The Silver Surfer.
NEW MUTANTS 28: B-
I hate Illyana Rasputin. She needs to go. Forever. Nice artwork and explanation of the Nate Grey and Cable dimensional conundrum though. In the end, this was just a filler issue though.
UNCANNY X-FORCE 12: A+
The black-ops squad is stuck in the world of the Age of Apocalypse. ‘Nuff said.
X-MEN LEGACY 252: D-
This book needs some direction. The Age of X aftermath is taking way too long. Plus it should line up with Schism. Can’t give it an F though because I am X-bias.
X-MEN: SCHISM 2: B
Tension builds between a poorly drawn Cyclops and a feisty Wolverine as the Hellfire Club continues to plot against the world’s mutants. I have high hopes for this event.
BATMAN BEYOND 8: B
I can’t decide if I like this book because its good or because I liked the cartoon. Regardless, I will keep reading it.
FLASHPOINT 4: A
The world’s heroes unite to stop Aquaman and Wonder Woman’s destructive war.
FLASHPOINT: BATMAN – KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE 3: A+
A chilling ending to one of the best mini series I’ve ever read. Terrific story telling and artwork.
HULK 38: A
Great Fear Itself tie-in. M.O.D.O.K takes the fight to Nazis while the Red Hulk gets his rear end smashed in by the Thing. Awesome? I think so.
PUNISHER 1: B
Brutal justice as only Frank Castle can deliver. If that’s your thing, this is your book.
THUNDERBOLTS 161: B
Another well done Fear Itself tie-in. I’ve really enjoyed this book ever since the Luke Cage era began. Nice to see Zemo too.
WOLVERINE 13: C
The only thing I like about this story is the fact that it is close to ending (I think). Hopefully it ends on a high note.
X-FACTOR 223: A
Always enjoyable. Probably because it is one of the few stand alone books in the Marvel Universe.
Dan Degnan is a High School English Teacher and Coach but more importantly a comic book enthusiast. He currently reads the majority of Marvel titles and most Batman books. He will be trying quite a few DC books after the relaunch so DC will be appearing more frequently in his reviews.
