Valiant Comics Month – Feb ’16

February is Valiant Comics month at Pittsburgh Comics! So what does that mean? Well, from now until the end of February, all Valiant trades will be double points! In addition to double points, most of their Volume 1 trades are priced at $9.99, which makes it pretty easy to check out something new.

We chose Valiant for our first for our first month-long sale because they are one of those publishers that always seems to go above and beyond. Not only do they have a fantastic line of books, but they truly do treat the retailers as partners. Originally founded in '89, the company relaunched with four titles (X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Bloodshot, and Archer & Armstrong) in 2012 after a several year hiatus, and since then, they've built a highly curated shared universe that spans thousands of years and several genres. Instead of flooding you with several titles each month, Valiant limits their line to around 10 titles that each fill a particular niche and play an important part in the Valiant Universe.

They also sent us a battle axe, which is pretty freakin' awesome. During the sale, we'll be taking pictures of customers with the battle axe whenever they purchase one of the trades, and we'll be sending all of the pictures to Valiant at the end of the month!

Where Do I Start Reading?

The answer to this really depends on if you want to jump right into what's going on currently or if you want to start from the beginning of the relaunch. If you want to start from the beginning, then I think the most critical of the new books would be X-O Manowar, which is still going strong with 43 issues and counting. Harbinger, which wrapped at issue 25, would be the other big book that has helped to establish a lot of the current status quo.

X-O is Valiant's flagship book, which tells the tale of Aric of Dacia, leader to the Visigoth people, who was abducted by aliens called the Vine. He's made a slave of the Vine until he bonds with the mysterious X-O armor and becomes the most powerful being in the universe. Harbinger, while slightly more grounded, focuses on the Harbinger Foundation and their quest to make the world a better place through the use of powerful psiots, but do the ends always justify the means? Harbinger is one of the properties that is currently being adapted into a feature film.

That said, you really don't need to go too far back if you want to get an idea of what's going on currently. The recent Valiant event, The Valiant, was a four-issue mini-series that did a wonderful job of educating you on who the major players are and serves as a perfect jumping on point for the current ongoing titles. After The Valiant, I would check out ongoing titles like Ninjak (James Bond meets Bruce Lee meets Bruce Wayne) and Bloodshot: Reborn (not the same as Bloodshot, which was a launch title), both of which have Vol. 1 trades available.
