Picks of the Week: 01/06/2016

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone is refreshed after another holiday season and ready for an all new batch of #1 issues! Tons of great books coming out, so these are our picks of the week:

SWAMP THING #1 (OF 6) | Picked by Colin, Josh, & Adam

Publisher: DC COMICS
(W) Len Wein (A/CA) Kelley Jones
Swamp Thing returns in an all-new series written by his co-creator, legendary writer Len Wein! Swamp Thing has received an ominous warning, and now he finds himself under attack from the forces of dark magic. These are more than just your average monsters-and there's something much worse looming on the horizon for Alec Holland!

UNCANNY X-MEN #1 | Picked by Colin

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS
(W) Cullen Bunn (A/CA) Greg Land
In a world that's never hated or feared mutants more, there is only one constant: BIGGER THREATS REQUIRE MORE THREATENING X-MEN. Refusing to accept one more mutant death, the most ruthless mutants on Earth have banded together to proactively mow down their enemies. But with a team populated by relentless killers, one question applies above all others: Can they stay away from each other's throats long enough to sever their targets'?

LAST CONTRACT #1 | Picked by Colin

Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
(W) Ed Brisson (A/CA) Lisandro Estherren
What's to Love: Last year, John Wick reminded everyone why hitmen make for awesome stories. Of course, we've known that for years as evidenced by The Killer and Hit. Ed Brisson's (Cluster, Sheltered) take on a retired hitman who finds himself as the target is a well-paced thriller that kept us guessing until the end, and newcomer Lisandro Estherren's (Tall Tales from the Badlands) noirish art perfectly sets the mood.

What It Is: A retired hitman, known only as "The Man," is forced back into the game when a list of his kills is leaked by a mysterious Broker. The list makes targets out of anyone associated with one of the The Man's previous jobs, not to mention The Man himself. As he fights to protect those the list exposes, The Man sets off to uncover the identity of the Broker so he can move on with his new life once and for all. But will the truth ruin those chances forever?

DOCTOR STRANGE #4 | Picked by Pat

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS
(W) Jason Aaron (A) Kevin Nowlan (CA) Chris Bachalo
• Doctor Strange has gathered a circle of magic-using friends to try and best monitor magic in the Marvel Universe.
•  But this tactic is too late as forces are destroying all magical objects and beings in the multiverse and they are turning their sights on our dimension.
•  At least Strange won't have to die alone...

Publisher: ONI PRESS INC.
(W) Charles Soule (A/CA) Alberto Alburquerque
Major Gabriel Drum has arrived on Earth, emerging from the very asteroid he was left on over a year ago and looking noticably... different. Determined to speak with the President, he'll let nothing stand in his way, and it looks like Blades' only option is to hear Drum out. The crew of the Clarke are unaware of Drum's existence, however, and are instead dealing with the consequences of going against the Builders' wishes. With Gomez gone, none of the crew is safe from the Builders' wrath.

SHERIFF OF BABYLON #2 (OF 8) (MR) | Picked by Pat

Publisher: DC COMICS
