Captain America 615.1

This issue is a good example of what a .1 issue should be, a jumping on point.  The “Trial of Captain America” arc came to an end last issue with Bucky Barnes declared not guilty in America but being extradited to Russia for his crimes as the Winter Soldier.  The issue left readers with two questions: what is going to happen to Bucky and who will don the mantle of Captain America in Bucky’s absence.  This .1 issue deals with the latter of those questions.

Ed Brubaker and Mitch Breitweiser make a great team; both know the characters their in charge of very well.  In 615.1, they craft a self contained story that seemingly sets the stage for what’s to come in Captain America, the last pages especially.

This issue is a good jumping on point for any new readers and an even better story for long time readers.

Thor 620.1

Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning

Thor 620.1 features two of my favorite writers, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.  The two are responsible for revamping the Marvel Cosmic universe with books like Annhilation, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Thanos Imperative.  As a Thor fan, I was excited to see their names on the cover.

Too bad I hated the issue.  Its not that I hated the story, which wasn’t bad for a self-contained story.  I hated the purpose of the issue.  Marvel claims that the .1 issues are jumping on points for new readers.  If that’s the case, why would this book be released in the middle of an on-going arc?  The World Eaters conflict is still going on.  In it, Balder supposedly died.  Yet he is seen in this book.  Wouldn’t a Thor .1 book be better off if it was released after the conclusion of an arc?

I liked the art though.  Brooks did a nice job drawing Asgard and all of the supporting cast to Thor.  I was most impressed with the double splash, which captured recent events in Thor canon.

Unfortunately, all this issue proves is that Marvel is misusing the .1 books.  This is anything but a jumping on point.

    thanks for reading the review.

  2. If I remember correctly Bucky was found guilty at the end of the trail, but was basically let off as time served.
